Art over Lunch: Heroes & Demons – Javanese Shadow Theatre
VIEW EVENT DETAILSGuided Tour at the Museum Rietberg With Johannes Beltz and Eva von Reumont
The wayang kulit shadow play is one of the oldest existing theatre traditions in Asia. The exhibition at the Museum Rietberg presents for the first time the significant collection of Tina and Paul Stohler, featuring precious and striking figures of gods, spirits, and ancestors.
Deputy director and the head of curatorship at the Rietberg Museum Johannes Beltz and co-curatro Eva von Reumont will guide us through the exhibition. We will explore the stories the figures have to tell about heroes and demons, morals and virtues, and the deeper meaning of life.

About the Guides
Johannes Beltz is the deputy director and the head of curatorship at the Rietberg Museum. He is also the curator for exhibitions portraying art from India and Southeast Asia. Besides his engagements at the Rietberg Museum, he is lecturer for Buddhism and Hinduism at PHZH for the teacher training program.
Eva von Reumont, a specialist on Javanese Shadow Theatre, has been researching since 2014 and is the author of two Master Thesis on the subject, currently pursuing her PhD in Social Anthropology at the University of Bern. As co-curator of the exhibition at the Museum Rietberg her deliberate choice was to focus on the character traits of the figures and the protagonists of the plays, an unprecedented angle.
About Art over Lunch
Art over Lunch is a monthly event series for members of Asia Society Switzerland. Each time, we visit an exhibition or a special part of a collection with artists, curators and experts for 45 minutes followed by a small lunch. The tours are designed to give members a different view on the vast troves at the museums and galleries in the city of Zurich and provide an opportunity to mingle and discuss.
Art over Lunch is made possible with the support of Bergos Berenberg.
