MedTech: Preparing For the Next Pandemic - Lessons Learned and Looking Ahead

Jain, Illumina Chief Commercial Officer Susan Tousi, and ACCESS Health International President Dr. William A. Haseltine on the lessons learned from the pandemic and preparations for the next one. The panel will examine how we can continue to drive innovation in healthcare, increase health equality, improve global collaboration, and address vaccine effectiveness against variants and its global rollout, among other topics. The conversation will be moderated by Asia Society Southern California Advisory Board Member Yiwen Li.
Speakers:

Sachin H. Jain, MD, MBA became president and CEO of SCAN Group and Health Plan on July 1, 2020.
Most recently, Jain was president and chief executive officer (CEO) of CareMore Health and Aspire Health, innovative integrated healthcare delivery companies. He led the growth, diversification, expansion and innovation of these companies and they grew to serve over 180,000 patients in 32 states with $1.6B in revenues. Under his leadership, CareMore built and scaled industry-leading programs to address loneliness, deliver hospital and primary care at home, and address the clinical needs of the highest-risk, highest-need patients.
He has published over 100 peer-reviewed articles in journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA and Health Affairs, and was an editor of the book, “The Soul of a Doctor” (Algonquin Press). Jain is an adjunct professor of medicine at the Stanford University School of Medicine and a contributor at Forbes. In addition, he serves on the Board of Directors at Make-A-Wish America.
Jain graduated magna cum laude from Harvard College with a BA in government and continued on to earn his MD from Harvard Medical School and MBA from Harvard Business School. He trained in medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital.

Susan Tousi is Chief Commercial Officer at Illumina, where she leads global sales, commercial operations, and commercial strategy and enablement. Tousi combines her extensive general management leadership and deep technical knowledge of Illumina’s product portfolio to ensure the global commercial success of the organization. She is committed to empowering Illumina customers with innovations to further unlock the power of the genome.
Tousi has been with Illumina since 2012, and previously lead the product development organization as Chief Product Officer. During that time, she was responsible for global engineering, consumables, sequencing applications, IVD, software and informatics development efforts. She has more than 25 years of R&D and business leadership at Fortune 100 technology companies and within the life sciences industry. Formerly, she was Corporate Vice President and General Manager for Eastman Kodak’s Consumer Inkjet Systems organization. Along with many academic honors, she has received numerous awards in both business and technology. In 2018, she was elected to the National Academy of Engineers. Tousi was named one of the 50 Top Diverse Leaders for 2020 by the California Diversity Council and is a member of the International Women’s Forum, a global organization of preeminent women of significant and diverse achievement.
Tousi holds an MBA degree from UCLA and an Honors BS in Engineering Science andMechanics from Pennsylvania State University.

William A. Haseltine PhD is a scientist, businessman, author and philanthropist. He was a professor at Harvard Medical School and Harvard School of Public Health from 1976-1993 where he was Founder and Chair of two academic research departments, the Division of Biochemical Pharmacology and the Division of Human Retrovirology. He is well known for his pioneering work on cancer, HIV/AIDS, and genomics. He has authored more than 200 manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals and more than a dozen books, including A Family Guide to Covid: Questions & Answers for Parents, Grandparents, and Children, COVID Commentaries: A Chronicle of a Plague and Variants! The Shape-Shifting Challenge of COVID-19.
He is a pioneer in biotechnology having founded more than a dozen biotechnology companies in fields ranging from the development of cutting-edge pharmaceuticals to new materials and fuels. He is the Founder of Human Genome Sciences, Inc. and served as the Chairman and CEO of the company for twelve years. Eight pharmaceutical products from companies he founded are currently approved by U.S. and international regulatory agencies.
Haseltine is currently Chair and President of ACCESS Health International, a foundation active in the United States, India, China, Singapore, and the Philippines.
Moderator:

Yiwen Li is Director for Strategy and Business Development at Masimo, a global medical technology company that develops and manufactures innovative noninvasive patient monitoring solutions. Previously, she was Director of Global Strategy at NantHealth, where she led the international expansion of its healthcare technology and precision medicine solutions. Li has broad experience in investing and global commercialization. Her investment experience includes equity research at Capital Group and direct investing at NantWorks.
Li serves as a board director at Give2Asia, an executive committee member of C-Sweet, and a participant of Committee of 100 ‘s Next Generation Leader initiative. She is also an Advisory Board member of Asia Society Southern California. Li received her master’s degree in Economics from the London School of Economics and a dual master’s degree in Global Studies from the University of Vienna.
