Challenges Facing Pacific Asia Convergence

Pacific Asia is converging economically very rapidly, enhanced by better connectivity. As income and standard of living rise, and with changing global power balances, national pride is bringing back old memories of animosity and territorial disputes. Would the convergence of Pacific Asia be disrupted? Would the US be part of the problem or part of the solution?
Narongchai Akrasanee, Ph.D., is a former Minister of Commerce and former Senator of Thailand and has been an economic adviser to several Thai Prime Ministers. He retired as Chairman of the Board of the Export-Import Bank of Thailand in June 2010. Dr. Narongchai also served as a Director of the Office of the Insurance Commission of Thailand during the period from October 2007 to August 2012. He is currently a Director of the National Economic and Social Development Board, Chairman of the Thailand National Committee for the Pacific Economic Cooperation Council and a member of the Monetary Policy Committee of the Bank of Thailand.
Dr. Narongchai also acts as a director for certain entities listed on the Stock Exchange of Thailand, including acting as Chairman of MFC Asset Management Public Company Limited, Chairman of Ananda Development Public Company Limited, Vice Chairman and an independent director of Thai-German Products Public Company Limited and as an independent director of Malee Sampran Public Company Limited. He is also Chairman and an independent director of The Brooker Group Public Company Limited, which is listed on the Stock Exchange of Thailand’s Market for Alternative Investment, and is an independent director of the AIA Group PLC.
