Eric Garcetti
42nd Mayor, City of Los Angeles
Eric Garcetti is the 42nd Mayor of Los Angeles. He was first elected Mayor in the 2013 election and won reelection in 2017. From 2001 until assuming the office of Mayor, Garcetti served on the Los Angeles City Council representing the 13th district. He also served four consecutive terms as president of the city council (2006–12). A fourth generation Angeleno, Garcetti grew up in the San Fernando Valley and received a B.A. in urban planning and political science as well as an M.A. in international affairs from Columbia University. As a Rhodes scholar, he studied at the University of Oxford and the London School of Economics. Before entering politics, he taught public policy, diplomacy, and world affairs at the University of Southern California (1997–99) and Occidental College in Los Angeles (1998–2001). He is a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy reserve. Garcetti was a member of Asia Society’s inaugural 2006 Class of Asia 21 Young Leaders and is on leave from the Asia Society Southern California board.
