For 10 days in mid-September of every year, the Ganesh Chaturthi festival is in full swing in Mumbai, India, with the whole city joining in song and parades in praise of the elephant-headed god. Devotees celebrate by honoring idols of the god with prayer and offerings before symbolically returning the representations of Ganesh back to the heavens on the eleventh day by immersing them into the sea. But now, 21st-century environmental awareness is becoming part of this timeless symbol of ritual devotion.
