On April 21, 2025, join Asia Society Seattle to unpack what the first ninety days of the Trump administration reveal about the future of U.S. & China relations. This Executive Roundtable will delve into the critical early indicators shaping the trajectory of one of the most consequential global relationships. Mark Cohen, Senior Tech Fellow at the Asia Society Northern California & Seattle and the Asia Society Policy Institute, and Gary Rieschel, Chair of Asia Society Northern California & Seattle & Founding Managing Partner at Qiming, will offer updates and insights. Topics will include how initial policy shifts and political engagements impact key sectors such as investment, technology, and trade, as well as touch upon the evolving role of rule of law in both countries. The discussion will explore how these early decisions set the tone for long-term cooperation or competition, with implications for global supply chains, innovation advancement, and legal frameworks.

Speaker Bios

Mark Cohen currently serves as the first Senior Tech Fellow at Asia Society Northern California and the Asia Society Policy Institute in Washington, DC. Mark was most recently Director of the Asia Intellectual Property and Technology Project at Berkeley Law (2016-2023). He is also a non-resident fellow at several universities and think tanks, including UC Berkeley Haas School of Business, George Mason University Law School and the National Bureau of Asian Research. Prior to joining Asia Society, Mark had a distinguished career in the U.S. government. He received the “Meritorious Honor Award”, the highest award in the US civil service, from President Donald Trump for his work on technology transfer issues involving China. He established the first office of the US Patent and Trademark Office in China and thereby launched the USPTO IP Attaché program. He invited China and Korea to join the “IP-5” consisting of the five largest patent, trademark and design offices in the world, and he established Track II IP dialogues under the US Chamber of Commerce with China as well as India. Mark was an exchange student in Chinese at Nanyang University (Singapore). He holds a bachelor’s degree in Chinese Studies from SUNY Albany, a Master’s degree in Chinese Literature from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and a Juris Doctor degree from Columbia University. He formerly taught at Fordham University in China and Renmin University in Beijing and served as General Counsel to a mid-sized European pharmaceutical company. He has been named an “IP Trailblazer” by the National Law Journal, a “Diplomat of the Year” by PhRMA, and a “Top 300 Global IP Strategist” by Intellectual Asset Management magazine. He has testified frequently before Congress and published widely on IP, antitrust and technology issues.

Gary Rieschel has over 30 years of successful operating and investing experience as a senior executive, entrepreneur, investor, and global business strategist. He held executive positions at Intel, Sequent, and Cisco, and was the Founder of the Softbank Venture Capital group. He is Founding Managing Partner of Qiming, a firm with over $8B USD under management focused on early stage investments in China and one of China’s premier VC firms. Mr. Rieschel’s investment areas are Healthcare and Cleantech. He advised the China Greentech Initiative, and the Rocky Mountain Institute in its introduction to China. He actively supports the US China Clean Energy Forum, PERC (Property and Environmental Research), The Nature Conservancy, the Climate Leadership Council, the Council on Foreign Relations, the Atlantic Council, and the U.S. Olympic Foundation where he and his wife Yucca serve as Sports Ambassadors for mental health for the U.S. Olympic team. He served on the joint venture boards of Blackrock/Bank of China and Silicon Valley Bank/Shanghai Pudong Development Bank. Gary holds a BA in Biology from Reed College in Portland, OR, and an MBA from the Harvard Business School. He lived in Japan for five years in the late 1980s and lived in Shanghai from 2005 through 2016. He now lives in Seattle, WA. He is the Chairman of the Asia Society Northern California Advisory Board and a Global Trustee.
