Event Recap: Progress and Prospects of U.S.-India Technology and Innovation Partnership
On June 13, 2024, Asia Society Seattle hosted an Executive Roundtable on "Progress and Prospects of U.S.-India Technology and Innovation Partnership." The discussion featured Prakash Gupta, the Consul General of India's first consulate in Seattle; Sital Kalantry, Professor of Law and Associate Dean of the School of Law at Seattle University; and David Roth, Director for International Public Policy at Amazon.
The speakers covered a range of topics addressing the emerging collaboration between India and the U.S., including the anchoring effects of the recently established U.S.-India Initiative on Critical and Emerging Technologies (ICET) and the development of common standards in artificial intelligence and quantum computing. Gupta focused on the involvement of technology as the defining aspect of the relationship between the United States and India, describing how a renewed focus through ICET incentivized the creation of the new consulate in Seattle. Roth provided anecdotes that narrated the rapidly increasing investment within India, as demonstrated by the number of Indian sellers on Amazon, which has grown over the past decade from 100 to 1.4 million.
Consul General Gupta, Roth, and Kalantry addressed attendees' questions on climate impact and innovation, the impact of restrictions on foreign legal practices, talent flow, and future opportunities for continued collaboration.
