On March 13, 2025, Asia Society Seattle hosted Emma Chanlett-Avery,  Deputy Director of the Asia Society Policy Institute, and Ambassador Michael W. Michalak, former U.S. Ambassador to Vietnam, to provide insights on U.S.-Japan relations under the second Trump administration. Topics covered included shifting U.S. approaches to alliances towards an America-first mentality, the role of tariffs and economic investment on Japanese engagement with the U.S., and the importance of security partnerships in global stability. Roundtable guests also brought up questions about the future of the QUAD, the U.S.'s partnerships with Southeast Asian nations, and the role of AI and technology in U.S.-Japan relations.
