Event Recap: Executive Roundtable on Proactive and Reactive AI Governance in China and the U.S.
On November 14th, 2024, Asia Society Seattle hosted an Executive Roundtable on "Proactive and Reactive AI Governance in China and the U.S." The discussion featured Kendra Schaefer, the Director of Tech Policy Research and Partner at Trivium China.
Schaefer covered a range of topics addressing the three major AI and algorithm regulations in China, including the regulation of recommendation algorithms, deep synthesis technologies or deepfakes, and AI-generated content. Schaefer focused on the implications of these regulations, describing how China’s technology regulations provide consumer and worker protections while simultaneously encouraging heavy censorship. Schaefer also addressed China’s support for global AI regulation and governance.
Schaefer addressed attendees’ questions on overregulation of AI technologies, China’s experimental approaches to regulation, industrial versus commercial AI, and the U.S. and China’s approaches to AI from a global governance perspective.
