Event Recap - Executive Roundtable on The Current State and the Future Direction of U.S.-China Relations with Jessica Chen Weiss

On July 6 2023, Asia Society Seattle hosted an executive roundtable discussion with Jessica Chen Weiss, the Michael J. Zak Professor for China and Asia-Pacific Studies at Cornell University and a non-resident fellow at Asia Society Policy Institute’s Center for China Analysis. The discussion was moderated by Andrew Batson, director of China research for Gavekal. Highlighting the need for humility and creativity, Weiss told the audience that resisting fatalism is vital to mutual success, explaining success includes working with Beijing as part of the solution. Proposing a redefinition of winning through cooperation and effective policies, Jessica Chen Weiss explained the ineffectiveness of decoupling ideas and provided examples of constructive engagement in both economic and social policies, e.g., in mitigating climate change. Thoughtful debates on the U.S. side are crucial, she emphasized, to making changes benefitting Sino-U.S. relations.
