Yasheng Huang Joins Asia Society Policy Institute's Center for China Analysis

Friday, March 14, 2025 — The Asia Society Policy Institute’s Center for China Analysis (CCA) is pleased to announce that Yasheng Huang has been named a Non-Resident Honorary Senior Fellow on Chinese Economy and Technology.
Dr. Huang is the Epoch Foundation Professor of Global Economics and Management at the MIT Sloan School of Management. He previously held academic positions at the University of Michigan and Harvard Business School. At MIT, he founded the China Lab, ASEAN Lab, and India Lab, initiatives that have provided low-cost consulting services to hundreds of small and medium-sized enterprises.
His work has been supported by numerous prestigious grants and fellowships, including the Sloan Foundation Grant, a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship, the Walmart Foundation Grant, a National Fellowship at Stanford University, and a Social Science Research Council-MacArthur Fellowship. The National Asia Research Program has recognized him as one of the most outstanding U.S.-based scholars conducting policy-relevant research.
Beyond academia, Dr. Huang has served as a consultant for the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank, and the OECD. He also sits on advisory and corporate boards for both nonprofit and for-profit organizations. Additionally, he is a founding member and current president of the Asian American Scholar Forum, an NGO dedicated to open science, protecting rights, and advancing the well-being of Asian American scholars.
Dr. Huang is widely published. His most recent book, The Rise and Fall of the EAST: How Exams, Autocracy, Stability, and Technology Brought China Success, and Why They Might Lead to Its Decline, was named a 2023 Best Book of the Year by Foreign Affairs. His forthcoming book will focus on China’s history of economic reform. Outside of his academic research, Dr. Huang has written for the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, Foreign Policy, Foreign Affairs, Project Syndicate, Caixin, and Caijing.
