On July 4, 2017, ASPI Director of Political-Security Affairs Lindsey Ford spoke with MSNBC about North Korea’s intercontinental ballistic missile test and its growing nuclear capabilities.
Ford described North Korea’s desire to “have the ability to strike any part of the U.S.” as “absolutely a red line” in terms of U.S. policy. On the other hand, North Korea seeks to secure “regime survival” with its newfound weaponry.
Ford highlighted that there is room for additional sanctions against North Korea, particularly on the part of China. She expects President Donald Trump and China's President Xi Jinping to have “very challenging conversations on the sidelines of the G20,” suggesting that Trump’s previous tone of giving “the Chinese an opportunity to fix this problem for us,” is changing.
