U.S. Ambassador to China Terry Branstad
VIEW EVENT DETAILS[Invitation-Only] Roundtable Discussion
The Asia Society Policy Institute (ASPI) is hosting a private, off-the-record discussion on U.S.-China relations with Ambassador Terry Branstad, who has served as U.S. Ambassador to China since May 2017. Prior to this role, he was Iowa’s longest serving governor, in office for six terms from 1983 to 1999 and 2010 to 2017.
Ambassador Branstad will discuss recent developments and challenges in what has been an eventful time in the U.S.-China bilateral relationship. Recent Trump administration national security documents have designated China a “strategic competitor.” Recently, the administration announced plans to impose tariffs on steel and aluminium as a way to pressure Beijing and others to take steps to reduce trade and investment asymmetries. At the same time, President Donald Trump has emphasized his good personal rapport with Chinese President Xi Jinping and has sought China’s assistance in increasing economic and diplomatic pressure on North Korea. The Ambassador will address these issues and answer questions about the administration's China policy and the future trajectory of the bilateral relationship.
This event is by invitation-only. For additional information, please contact [email protected].
Speaker:
Terry Branstad is the U.S. Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China. Ambassador Branstad was born, raised and educated in Iowa. He was elected to the Iowa House in 1972, ’74 and ’76, and elected as Iowa’s lieutenant governor in 1978. He was Iowa’s longest-serving governor, from 1983 to 1999. Following his four terms as governor, he served as President of Des Moines University (DMU). During his 6-year tenure, he was able to grow the university into a world-class educational facility. In October of 2009, sensing a need for change in the way state government operates, he retired from DMU and was once again elected Governor in 2010. His second tenure as Governor of Iowa continued till 2017 when he was nominated by President Donald Trump to be the United States’ Ambassador to China.
