Asia Society Policy Institute Director of Asia-Pacific Sustainability Alistair Ritchie presented at the International Workshop for Joint Efforts to Respond to the Climate Crisis on Emissions Trading Systems in Asia.

The development of ETSs in Asia has emerged as a crucial strategy for achieving national greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction goals. This presentation examines the role of carbon pricing; the objectives and intended impacts of ETSs; current status ETSs in the region. It also addresses the key issues associated with these systems and discusses potential solutions. Key areas covered include: scope, cap setting, interactions between ETSs and the power market, allocation methods, monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV), climate finance, and the carbon market. The presentation concludes with insights on the path forward for effective ETS development in Asia.
