Emissions Trading Systems in Asia – Current Status, Key Issues, and Solutions

The development of ETSs in Asia has emerged as a crucial strategy for achieving national greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction goals. This presentation examines the role of carbon pricing; the objectives and intended impacts of ETSs; current status ETSs in the region. It also addresses the key issues associated with these systems and discusses potential solutions. Key areas covered include: scope, cap setting, interactions between ETSs and the power market, allocation methods, monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV), climate finance, and the carbon market. The presentation concludes with insights on the path forward for effective ETS development in Asia.
