SUMMARY:
The Asia Society Policy Institute, a solutions-oriented think and do tank headquartered in New York with an office in Washington, D.C., seeks a Director of Strategy and Engagement to work closely with ASPI’s Managing Director on strategy and stakeholder engagement for ASPI’s projects, deliverables, research, and communications.
RESPONSIBILITIES (80%):
- Coordinate and manage the execution of Asia Society Policy Institute’s strategic objectives, including but not limited to:
- Review all ASPI outputs and publications for editorial standards and manage dissemination efforts.
- Oversee planning and execution for ASPI public and private programming.
- Track statistics and inform strategy on audience engagement.
- Run weekly meetings on editorial and communications priorities; stay abreast of industry trends and identify strategic opportunities for ASPI.
- Contribute substantially to fundraising efforts, including but not limited to providing input on grants, corporate proposals, individual giving.Assist with hiring, staff management, and staff development with particular focus on New York office staff.
- Supervise editorial/communications staff in line with strategic objectives;
- With ASPI’s Director of Operations, provide critical support on project and program management to all ASPI staff.
- Draft internal meeting agendas and external meeting talking points for Managing Director.
- Direct stakeholder management and coordinate ASPI partnerships (for ASPI/Policy Council activities, Asia Society Center Directors, key funders).
- Build and maintain a network of relationships with U.S. and international stakeholders relevant to regional policy issues.
- Establish and maintain contacts with influential policy makers in the U.S. and Asia—including relationships with New York City Consulates and Missions—as well as with relevant leading scholars, business figures, and policy influencers.
Direct special projects on an as-needed basis for work related to general operating support or stand-alone programs, including but not limited to (20%):
- Writing proposals and budgets for special projects.
- Building agendas and participant lists for special project events.
- Supervising project staff on planning, logistics, execution, expense tracking and funder reports for these projects.
- Authoring event reports, opinion pieces, analytic reports, policy roadmaps, and recommendations for U.S.-based, regional, and international audiences, as well as pieces for publication on the Asia Society Policy Institute website.
- Other administrative and supervisory duties, as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Advanced degree in international relations/affairs, political science, public policy, international economics, or other related area preferred.
- At least 10 years of experience, including at least five years managing non-profit policy projects, including managing grants, staff and deliverables.
- Expertise in Asia policy;
- Experience in developing, coordinating, and running programs and initiatives.
- Demonstrated competence in media interviews, public speaking, and writing.
- Proficiency in an Asian language a plus; fluency in English required.
- Experience living and/or working in Asia preferred.
