China Has the Upper Hand in Trade Talks
Wendy Cutler on CNBC
On May 3, 2018, on the same day as the U.S. trade delegation arrived in Beijing for talks on tariffs, ASPI Vice President Wendy Cutler appeared on CNBC to discuss what to expect from the negotiations between the United States and China.
After months of tit-for-tat tariffs between the two countries, Cutler believes that “this is just the beginning of a process and we shouldn’t expect any substantial outcomes.” She is hopeful, however, that despite recent hardline statements made by both sides, once the meetings begin certain openings will present themselves where possible compromises can be reached”.
Cutler says that although both sides have a lot to lose in a potential trade war, China has the upper hand as they have “the wherewithal to live through a trade war longer than the U.S.” (3 min., 43 sec.)
