Asia Society Philippines joins the world in remembering Pope Francis

MAKATI, PHILIPPINES— Asia Society Philippines joins the world in remembering Pope Francis. Affectionately known to Filipinos as Lolo Kiko — “Lolo” meaning grandfather, and “Kiko” a Filipino nickname for Francis — his deep compassion, humility, and solidarity with the Filipino people left an indelible mark on our collective memory.
Home to over 80 million Catholics, the Philippines has shared a deep and enduring bond with Pope Francis, who visited the country in 2015 and drew a historic crowd of up to 7 million during a landmark mass in Manila. He came to the Philippines to stand with communities devastated by Typhoon Yolanda, offering comfort and acknowledging the strength and faith of the Filipino people. His visit highlighted the resilience, warmth, and spirit that continue to define the nation.

Reflecting on his visit, he once shared: “The gestures I saw, the father who held up his child, the people waving with such joy — these moved me deeply. The Filipino people have a great heart.” His visit was a moment of profound connection, bridging faith, culture, and humanity. We honor his enduring legacy with heartfelt gratitude.
THE PEOPLE'S POPE
Pope Francis, dubbed as "The People's Pope", is the first Latin-American leader of the Roman Catholic Church. Known for his humanitarian work, his tenure is hallmarked by his humility, spontaneity, and advocacies of peace, inclusivity, and the eradication of poverty. His attitude towards social justice is evident in his encyclical, Laudato si' — a letter calling for a global dialogue about shaping the future of the planet through people's daily actions and decisions. Echoing this, he urged Filipinos in his 2015 homily to shun "social structures, which perpetuates poverty, ignorance and corruption." He also delivered a message to Philippine leaders to "marshal the moral resources needed to face the demands of the present, and to pass on to coming generations a society of authentic justice, solidarity, and peace."
Pope Francis passed on Monday, 21 April 2025, after suffering a stroke and cardiac arrest. He was 88 years old.
His legacy endures, firmly established through his unwavering advocacy and the deep global impact of his contributions.
