Asia Society Northern California will host a discussion on Hong Kong National Security Law and the Future of Financial Markets featuring MSCI Chairman and CEO Henry Fernandez on Monday, September 14. The event will be moderated by Andy Rothman, Investment Strategist at Matthews Asia and Asia Society Northern California Board. Jack Wadsworth, Asia Society Northern California Honorary Chair, will give opening remarks. This program is complimentary and open to the global community.
This is the second of five events in the Seeking Truth Through Facts US-China program series from Asia Society Northern California.
Hong Kong’s unique status puts it squarely in the middle of growing tensions between China and the United States. How will China’s new security law test the financial hub’s resilience? This discussion will offer a dispassionate deep dive into all relevant aspects of the financial markets in Hong Kong including legal, regulatory and personnel issues; confidence of issuers and intermediaries in the functioning of the market; roles of the SFC, the Hong Kong Monetary Authority and the Financial Services Secretary and the Financial Secretary; role of the judiciary; and the quality of governance and the future ownership of the Hong Kong Stock exchange.

SPEAKERS
As MSCI’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Henry Fernandez has led the firm for over two decades to its position today as a premier provider of indexes and portfolio construction and risk management tools, as well as Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) data and research. MSCI is an S&P 500 company that is listed on the New York Stock Exchange. It has revenues of over USD 1.5 billion and a market cap of over USD 25 billion. In 2019, Mr. Fernandez was one of 30 CEOs named in Barron’s list of the World’s Best CEOs.
Prior to becoming CEO, Mr. Fernandez was a Managing Director at Morgan Stanley, where he worked in emerging markets business strategy, equity derivatives sales and trading, mergers and acquisitions, mortgage-backed securities and corporate finance. Prior to Morgan Stanley, he was President of private equity firm HispaniMedia, Inc. He also founded Ferco Partners, Inc., a private equity investment firm in Mexico and from 1976 to 1979 he was a diplomat in the Nicaraguan Embassy in Washington, DC.
Andy Rothman (Moderator) is an Investment Strategist at Matthews Asia. He is principally responsible for developing research focused on China’s ongoing economic and political developments while also complementing the broader investment team with in-depth analysis on Asia. In addition, Andy plays a key role in communicating to clients and the media the firm’s perspectives and latest insights into China and the greater Asia region. Prior to joining Matthews Asia in 2014, Andy spent 14 years as CLSA’s China macroeconomic strategist where he conducted analysis into China and delivered his insights to their clients. Previously, Andy spent 17 years in the U.S. Foreign Service, with a diplomatic career focused on China, including as head of the macroeconomics and domestic policy office of the U.S. Embassy in Beijing. He earned an M.A. in public administration from the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs and a B.A. from Colgate University. He isa proficient Mandarin speaker.
