Vikram Chandra: Geek Sublime
VIEW EVENT DETAILSMeet the Author
ASNC and the Mechanics’ Institute are pleased to feature Vikram Chandra and the release of his dazzling newest book, Geek Sublime: The Beauty of Code, the Code of Beauty. Geek Sublime is a brain-teasing, criss-crossing meditation on the aesthetics of writing, the logic of coding; and the elusive connection between the two. Part personal memoir, a short history of coding, an essay on linguistics and an exegesis on the culture of programmers, the book weaves themes that cause one to philosophize on beauty, logic, poetry and code. Multi-tiered computer programs conjure ruminations on Chandra’s own multilayered identity; the algorithm of programming language is linked to the algorithm of Sanskrit grammar; and the machismo culture of programmers evokes thoughts on the gendered code of Empire under the British Raj.
Vikram Chandra is the highly acclaimed author of four books including Sacred Games and Love and Longing in Bombay. Sacred Games won the Hutch Crossword Award for English Fiction in 2006 and a Salon Book Award in 2007; and was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award for Fiction. Love and Longing in Bombay, won, among others, the Commonwealth Writers Prize for Best Book.
