In an era of rapid artificial intelligence (A.I.) advancements, policymakers and industry experts bear the responsibility of steering the ethical course of A.I. technologies. On February 20 from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. PT, join us on Google's Mountain View campus for a discussion on the intricate landscape of A.I. policy and product development. A.I. scholars and industry experts will explore global approaches to align A.I. innovation with ethical standards. Speakers include:
- Alice Hunt Friend, Head of AI & Emerging Tech Policy at Google;
- Kathy Baxter, Principal Architect of Responsible AI & Tech at Salesforce;
- Ganapathy Krishnan, Vice President and Science Fellow at ServiceNow;

SPEAKERS
Kathy Baxter is Principal Architect of Responsible AI & Tech at Salesforce. She develops research-informed best practices to educate Salesforce employees, customers, and the industry on the development of responsible AI. She is a Visiting AI Fellow at NIST, a member of Singapore’s Advisory Council on the Ethical Use of AI and Data and AI Verify Foundation, and on the board of EqualAI.
Prior to Salesforce, she worked at Google, eBay, and Oracle in User Experience Research. She is the co-author of two editions of "Understanding Your Users: A Practical Guide to User Research Methodologies." She received her MS in Engineering Psychology/Human Factors Engineering and BS in Applied Psychology from the Georgia Institute of Technology.
John Cabeca is the U.S. Intellectual Property (IP) Counselor for South Asia serving Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. Working through the American Embassy in New Delhi, India Mr. Cabeca is the principal officer within the U.S. embassies and consulates throughout South Asia on policy matters related to the protection and enforcement of IP rights. A 35-year veteran of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, John assists U.S. companies in the region, advocates for effective IP policies, advises U.S. ambassadors and officials on foreign practices, interacts with foreign officials to exchange information and share best practices, and promotes IP awareness to support strong and vibrant IP systems globally. Previously, Mr. Cabeca was the Regional Director for the Silicon Valley USPTO in San Jose, California, where he established and led the office and carried out the strategic direction on IP policy for the USPTO relentlessly advocating for the needs of intellectual property stakeholders.
Alice Hunt Friend is Head of AI & Emerging Tech Policy at Google. Friend is an expert in defense politics and emerging capabilities, and has served in several roles at the U.S. Department of Defense. Most recently, she was the deputy chief of staff to the deputy secretary of defense. She has a PhD in International Relations, and was previously the vice president for research and analysis at the Institute for Security and Technology and a senior fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies and adjunct senior fellow at the Center for a New American Security. She has published articles in the Washington Post, Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, War on the Rocks, Lawfare, and Just Security.
Dr. Ganapathy Krishnan (Krish) is currently a Vice President and Science Fellow at ServiceNow. Krish brings with him a wealth of expertise, having previously worked at Amazon, Microsoft, and most recently Flipkart. During his tenure at Flipkart, he led applied sciences teams, harnessing the power of AI to enhance e-commerce experiences across multiple languages.
At Flipkart, Krish pioneered the introduction of conversational assistants to hundreds of millions of shoppers, demonstrating his ability to scale generative AI solutions effectively. Under his guidance, Flipkart played a key role in leveraging AI for the benefit of a vast audience. At Microsoft, Krish worked on Bing Local Search and at Amazon led Connections for Operations.
Krish is also a seasoned entrepreneur having founded multiple technology companies with successful exits.
In Krish’s words “My passion for artificial intelligence traces back to my Ph.D. dissertation, where I explored neural networks within the realm of Computer Vision. I believe we are in an exciting era of AI resurgence, sparking both fervent anticipation and cautious reflection as its rapid advancements bring immense opportunities alongside complex ethical concerns. My motivation lies in harnessing AI’s potential to create a positive impact for the global community. I am excited about AI’s potential to promote inclusivity and level the playing field worldwide.”
Jacob Ward is an on-air correspondent for NBC News, covering the intersection of technology, human behavior, and social change for Nightly News, The TODAY Show, and MSNBC. He is the former editor-in-chief of Popular Science magazine, and was Al Jazeera’s science and technology correspondent from 2013 to 2018. Ward is a lecturer at the Stanford d.school, and was a 2018-2019 Berggruen Fellow at Stanford University’s Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences, where he began writing The Loop: How AI is Creating a World without Choices and How to Fight Back, out now from Hachette Book Group. The book explores how artificial intelligence and other decision-shaping technologies will amplify good and bad human instincts. Ward has written for The New Yorker, The New York Times Magazine, Wired, and many other publications. In addition to hosting documentaries for Nat Geo and Discovery, he’s the host of the landmark four-hour PBS television series, “Hacking Your Mind,” about human decision-making and manipulation.
