** SOLD OUT ** Jung Chang: Empress Dowager Cixi
VIEW EVENT DETAILSASNC and the Mechanics’ Institute are pleased to host writer Jung Chang, who will talk about her latest work Empress Dowager Cixi: The Concubine Who Launched Modern China. The book is a biography of Empress Dowager Cixi, one of the most important women in Chinese history. As a concubine to the emperor, Cixi made herself the real ruler of China following her husband’s death. Chang vividly describes how Cixi fought against monumental obstacles to change China and Chang overturns the conventional view of Cixi as a diehard conservative and cruel despot.
Jung Chang is best known for the bestselling Wild Swans, which looks at the history of China through the lives of her grandmother, her mother, and herself, and has sold 10 million copies worldwide. Chang lives in London. Empress Dowager Cixi is Chang’s first book in eight years.
