Asia Society Northern California and the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in San Francisco will host a panel discussion featuring American and Korean experts on the topic COVID-19 Success Stories: Lessons Learned from the U.S. and Korean Peninsula. Opening remarks will be made by Consul General Yoon Sang-soo, who recently arrived in San Francisco.
Panelists will address lessons learned from South Korea in mitigating COVID-19, updates regarding its vaccine rollout plan, and the threat of COVID-19 variants, as well as the United States' success in rolling out vaccinations for its citizens and the topic of vaccine diplomacy and how the U.S. will manage its vaccine surplus.

Yeuen Kim MD MAS is a clinical instructor in Primary Care and Population Health, Stanford University School of Medicine and an epidemiologist/MD in Outbreak Management, Central COVID19 Command, at the San Francisco Department of Public Health. After growing up in the US, Korea, and France, she trained at Brown University, the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, and at UCSF. Her areas of expertise include population health and the built environment, medical humanities and tolerance for ambiguity, and inpatient narrative oncology.
Dr. Alice Hyun-Kyung Tan is Internist and International Healthcare Consultant at MizMedi Women’s Hospital in Seoul. Prior to joining MizMedi, she worked as a Clinical Associate Professor at Samsung Medical Center from 2014-2018, providing primary care services to foreign heads of state and heads of mission. She was also part of the 2017-2018 Pyeongchang Olympic Games Organizing Committee and was the Lead Physician for the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics NBC/Comcast IBC Office, leading a team of eight physicians providing 24/7 care during the Winter Olympics. Dr. Tan received her undergraduate degree from the University of California, Berkeley and obtained her medical degree from Yonsei University Wonju College of Medicine.
Dr. James Lawler, Special Advisor for Health at The Asia Group, is an infectious disease physician trained in tropical medicine and public health whose career has focused on emerging infectious diseases, pandemic threats, and health system and public health preparedness. Dr. Lawler currently serves as Executive Director for International Programs and Innovation for the Global Center for Health Security as well as the Deputy Medical Director for the Nebraska Biocontainment Unit at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC). Before joining the UNMC team in November 2017, he served 21 years in the US Navy Medical Corps. Dr. Lawler has responded to multiple infectious disease emergencies, including Ebola and Marburg in Africa and COVID-19 domestically and abroad. Dr. Lawler advises local, state, and national leadership on COVID-19 response as well a variety of entities in the public and private sectors. He graduated from Georgetown University School of Medicine after receiving his undergraduate degree in biomedical engineering from Duke University. Read full bio here.
Paul Choi is the Head of Research in Korea at CLSA, an investment bank. Prior to this role, Paul spent many years as an investment manager, most recently running Asia ex-Japan equity strategies at Lazard Asset Management. Prior to Lazard, he managed equity hedge funds at Shinhan BNP Paribas Asset Management, Corevest Capital Management, and Tiedemann Global Emerging Markets. Before pursuing his graduate studies, Paul worked as an investment analyst at CLSA. He is a graduate of the Sloan School at Massachusetts Institute of Technology with an MBA and Yonsei University in Seoul with a BA degree. He is a member of Korea Corporate Governance Forum and CFA Institute.
