China's Investment Surge in Silicon Valley

California has attracted more Chinese direct investment deals than any other U.S. state and Silicon Valley is a big reason why. Silicon Valley’s dynamic high tech market is an attractive destination for Chinese firms and investors as they expand their businesses overseas. It has the technology, talent, and ideas that China needs to fuel its own growing high tech sectors and move up the value chain. Overall, the total value of inbound investments from China to California in 2013 is already on track to break last year’s record high. Chinese investments into California are growing rapidly and could reach $60 billion by 2020, but only if the state and private sector do a better job working together to attract Chinese capital.

The Asia Society is pleased to partner with the Silicon Valley Business Journal and J.P. Morgan Chase for this year’s International Business Forum, which will feature experts and business leaders who will explore the latest trends emerging from Chinese investment into the Valley. The event builds on an October 2012 Asia Society/Rhodium Group report, entitled Chinese Direct Investment in California, which is the most comprehensive study to date of Chinese investment in the Golden State and the U.S. overall. Speakers will examine why Chinese investors are choosing Silicon Valley, what opportunities exist for local businesses, and what Chinese investment deals just completed and in the pipeline tell us about the overall investment climate in California and the U.S. With California Governor Jerry Brown just returning from a trade mission to China in April, what has been done to smooth the way for more Chinese investment into the state? Has leadership change in China impacted the outbound investment picture?
