As we mark the one-year anniversary of the historic APEC Summit in San Francisco, we are honored to welcome back Ambassador Matt Murray, U.S. Senior Official for APEC, following the recent APEC Summit in Peru. The 2023 San Francisco APEC Summit saw many historic moments, including a Biden-Xi Meeting, the issuance of the Golden Gate Declaration, and the CEO Summit, which brought together leading, international executives to enhance public-private partnerships. With Asia Society's Season of Australia, we will be welcoming former U.S. Ambassador to Australia Jeff Bleich to moderate. The program will also feature opening remarks by Maryam Muduroglu, Chief of Protocol for the San Francisco Mayor’s Office of Protocol.
Join us as we uncover key takeaways from the City of San Francisco and the State of California, while also exploring the global ripple effects of the summit. Ambassador Murray, having recently concluded the Peru Summit, will offer insights into APEC’s future priorities as the region prepares for the upcoming summits in Korea in 2025 and Vietnam in 2027.

SPEAKER BIOS

Matt Murray was appointed as the U.S. Senior Official for Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) in February 2022. In this role, he coordinates U.S. participation in APEC and also oversees the Office of Economic Policy in the State Department’s Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs.
Prior to his current assignment, Matt led the State Department’s Bureau of Economic and Business Affairs (EB) as Senior Bureau Official from August 2021 to January 2022, and he served as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Trade Policy and Negotiations from September 2020 to August 2021.
Matt has focused on U.S. economic engagement with the Asia Pacific region throughout his State Department career, including as Minister Counselor for Economic Affairs at the U.S. Embassy in Beijing, Counselor for Economic Affairs at the U.S. Embassy in Canberra, and Special Assistant for East Asian and Pacific issues in the Office of the Under Secretary for Economic Growth, Energy and Environment.
Matt is a Senior Foreign Service Officer who also has served overseas in Beijing, Shanghai, Dar es Salaam and New Delhi and in Washington, D.C. as Director of the 24/7 Watch in the Bureau of Intelligence and Research. He has master’s degrees from the U.S. Army War College and the University of Pittsburgh and a bachelor’s degree from Washington College in Chestertown, Maryland.

Jeff Bleich is a Visiting Scholar at Stanford University's Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences, and serves on the President's National Security Education Board. He previously served as the U.S. Ambassador to Australia from 2009 to 2013, Special Counsel to President Obama in the White House, and a Senior Advisor to the Director of National Intelligence. Ambassador Bleich has held several other foreign affairs appointments including three terms as Chair of the Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board, and as Secretary John Kerry's appointee to the East West Center.
A specialist in digital technology and complex dispute resolution, he has been a federally appointed Special Master, a Partner at both Munger, Tolles & Olson and Dentons, and the Chief Legal Officer at Cruise LLC. After graduating UC Berkeley School of Law, he clerked for Chief Justice Rehnquist of the United States Supreme Court as well as for both the Iran-U.S. Claims Tribunal and the International Court of Justice in The Hague. He has been regularly listed as one of the United States' 500 most influential lawyers, and in 2024 was honored as a Burton "Legend in the Law" at the Library of Congress..
Ambassador Bleich has served as the Board Chair of PG&E Co., and Board Chair of Nuix Ltd. in Australia. He also serves on the board of RAND Australia, and the Steering Committee of National Security Leaders for America (NSL4A). He is a life member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the American Law Institute. Ambassador Bleich previously served as the Chair of the California State University Board of Trustees, Trustee of Amherst College, President of the California State Bar, and President of the Bar Association of San Francisco. Flinders University in Adelaide Australia has named the Jeff Bleich Centre on Democracy and Disruptive Technologies in his honor.
