Event Recap: Asia’s Approach to Cybersecurity in a Hyperconnected World
SILICON VALLEY, CALIFORNIA - On December 10, 2024, Asia Society Northern California hosted an Executive Roundtable on “Asia’s Approach to Cybersecurity in a Hyperconnected World.” The discussion featured Dave Kleidermacher, VP of Engineering for Android and Made-by-Google Security & Privacy at Google, and Andrew J. Grotto, Founder & Co-Director of the Program on Geopolitics, Technology, and Governance at Stanford University’s Center for International Security and Cooperation (CISAC).
Kleidermacher and Grotto covered a range of topics, including the need for transparency in cybersecurity markets, increased tensions between U.S. - China cyber relations, and the significance of public-private partnerships in standardizing cybersecurity best practices. Grotto outlined how cybersecurity threats have geopolitical implications, while Kleidermacher focused on the importance of a global governance structure for cybersecurity best practices. Kleidermacher and Grotto also discussed ways to generate consumer demand for more effective cybersecurity products.
During audience Q&A, Kleidermacher and Grotto addressed questions on how governments approach and respond to cyber warfare, identifying intentions behind personal data usage, and how trade policy responds to technological threats.
