Asia Society Texas Center Offers Free Admission Friday, May 18, 2012
VIEW EVENT DETAILSAsia Society Texas Center in Houston will offer free admission for all to its inaugural art exhibition on Friday, May 18, as part of the Association of Art Museum Directors’ (AAMD) Art Museum Day, which coincides with International Museum Day.
From 11 am to 6 pm, the Texas Center will offer complimentary entry to Treasures of Asian Art: A Rockefeller Legacy. Non-Asia Society members normally pay $5 exhibition admission. Admission to the building itself is always free to everyone.
On view in the Louisa Stude Sarofim Gallery through September 16, 2012, Treasures of Asian Art features 60 works selected from the Mr. and Mrs. John D. Rockefeller 3rd Collection of traditional Asian art at the Asia Society Museum in New York. The exhibition includes outstanding examples of bronze and stone sculpture from South and Southeast Asia and exquisite ceramics from China, Korea and Japan.
Treasures of Asian Art is joined by two other installations at the Texas Center. Contemporary Asian Art: Texas Connections comprises works of art on loan from Texas collectors. Curated by Kimberly Davenport, Director of Rice University Art Gallery, it is installed in the Fayez Sarofim Grand Hall. Korean-born artist Lee Ufan’s site-specific sculpture Relatum – signal, inaugurates the Center’s Allen Sculpture Garden adjoining the Sarofim Gallery. Both exhibitions are always free and open to the public.
“AAMD believes that art should be accessible and relevant to all, and we are so pleased that Asia Society Museum is joining with us and the global community of museums to celebrate the role museums play in their communities and to encourage visitors to share their museum experiences,” said Chris Anagnos, Executive Director of AAMD.
Visitors are encouraged to share their Art Museum Day experiences via social media using the hashtag #ArtMuseumDay. Find Asia Society Texas Center on Facebook, Twitter, and Foursquare.
