A New Nepal: Challenges for Enduring Peace and Democracy

The Ambassador will address current political and economic issues in Nepal, as well as the state of US relations. This event will give you an exclusive opportunity to hear first-hand about recent developments in Nepal and the promulgation of the new constitution that will be drafted this May.
His Excellency Shankar Sharma has been serving as the Ambassador of Nepal to the United States since January, 2010. Previously, he was Vice-Chairman of the National Planning Commissionof Nepal from 2002 to 2006, where he provided leadership for national planning, policy guidance, program development and monitoring. He introduced Nepal's Poverty Reduction Strategy program, the Medium-term Expenditure Framework, and facilitated inter-agency collaboration for economic and human development. Dr. Sharma also worked as a consultant to the Constitution Committee on the "Distribution of Natural Resources, Economic Rights and Public Revenue" and helped to draft Nepal's new Constitution. Before joining the National Planning Commission in 1997, he worked as a:Senior Economic Advisor in the Ministry of Finance, Nepal; Senior Economist in the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies, Singapore; and Fellow in the East-West Center, Hawaii.
Dr. Sharma has published eight books (edited or authored) and more than 50 articles on the economy, energy, and the environment of the Asia-Pacific region, and also has a Ph.D. in economics from the University of Hawaii. He is married and has a son and a daughter.
