The Future of Iran
VIEW EVENT DETAILSA Luncheon Presentation by Dr. JERROLD D. GREEN, President and Chief Executive Officer, Pacific Council on International Policy Since the disastrous outcome of the Islamic Republic's recent Presidential election, Iran has sustained enormous pressure from pro-democratic forces within the country as well as approbation from abroad. Among the most contentious issues are Iran's crude handling of the election, its ruthless suppression of protestors, denial of the Holocaust and its nuclear program. Iran is a uniquely important state at the heart of regional security for both the Gulf region and South Asia. As a significant regional power, an exemplar to the Islamic world and a major oil producer it is imperative that Iran take its rightful place among the community of nations. What is Iran's future political course? Does the revolt of the clerics signal a shift of power and what does it mean for Washington and the world? What will it take to contain Iran's nuclear ambitions? Dr. Jerrold D. Green is the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Pacific Council on International Policy in Los Angeles. He is also a Research Professor of Communications and Business at the University of Southern California. Prior to this, he served as Senior Advisor for Middle East/South Asia and Director of the Middle East Development Council at the RAND Corporation. Dr. Green graduated from the University of Massachusetts and has as an M.A. and Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Chicago, where he specialized in the politics of the Middle East. He has written widely on Middle East themes, focusing on American-Middle East policy.
