Video: Understanding the Significance of the Tang Shipwreck
On Monday night, Asia Society hosted a special lecture by scholar and the Florence and Herbert Irving Curator of the Arts of South and Southeast Asia at the Metropolitan Museum of Art John Guy on how shipwreck archaeology has given unprecedented historical context to the state of trade and exchange during the late Tang Dynasty. Guy's presentation examines several specific ceramic, gold, and silver pieces that were discovered in the Belitung shipwreck that sank in the Java Sea in the early ninth century.
The lecture is held in conjunction with Asia Society Museum's exhibition Secrets of the Sea: A Tang Shipwreck and Early Trade in Asia, which is on view through June 4, 2017.
