Three Shanghai Kunqu Opera Performances for New York Audiences

The Shanghai Kunqu Opera Troupe, one of China's most renowned theater companies, is known for its extraordinary craftsmanship. Kunqu artists combine acting, movement, singing and live music for a total theatrical immersion. One of the oldest and most influential forms of Chinese opera, the troupe brings 20 performers to New York for three special performances.

The Lanke Mountain

The Lanke Mountain is a tale of greed, ambition, betrayal and humor; a story which harkens back to a historical past while connecting to contemporary times. The story followings the heroine Cui, who divorces and then attempts to return to her husband. It is acted with an abandon, rarely seen in Kunqu performances, which are generally marked by subtlety and restraint.
