Susie Ibarra wins 2025 Pulitzer Prize in music for Asia Society-commissioned Sky Islands

Last week it was announced that Filipinx composer, percussionist, and sound artist Susie Ibarra received the 2025 Pulitzer Prize in music for Sky Islands, a musical tribute to rich and fragile ecosystems inspired by the distinct rainforest habitats of her native region of Luzon, Philippines. Commissioned and produced by the Asia Society, the piece had its world premiere here in New York in July, 2024.
In a 2024 conversation with Rachel Cooper, director of Global Performing Arts and Culture as Diplomacy at Asia Society, Ibarra reflected on how the physical and sonic attributes of the rainforest inspired the piece. You can watch an excerpt of that conversation below.
The performances were held in conjunction with the COAL + ICE exhibition and series of programs at Asia Society, Feb. 13 to Aug. 11, 2024, designed to provoke thought and action on climate change. You can watch excerpts from the performances below.
