Multimedia: Godharis Quilts of India by Geeta Khandelwal
Geeta Khandelwal started sewing her own clothes as a teenager, which led to a lifelong fascination with the rich world of Indian textiles. She draws on over four decades of experience making quilts in her new book Godharis of Maharashtra, Western India, which highlights the godhari quilts made by village women in the Western state.
A godhari is a quilt stitched with old clothes and fabrics. Khandelwal described the quilts in a recent interview with Verve: “Godharis are made out of recycled fabrics like saris and lungis which are readily available at home. It’s a free style of art — they use whatever material is available and intuitively a unique design appears. Each godhari tells an interesting story.”
Join Geeta Khandelwal on the evening of June 9 for a lecture and sale event at Asia Society.
