When Societies Open: The Global Philanthropic Footprint of George Soros [SOLD OUT]
VIEW EVENT DETAILSLuncheon featuring a dialogue between George Soros and Orville Schell
George Soros, legendary hedge fund manager and philanthropist, is chairman of the Open Society Foundations and has spent decades fostering democratic and social reforms around the world. His efforts have included a long list of countries in political and economic transition — from his native Hungary to the former Soviet Union, from Indonesia to Myanmar, and many more.
Myanmar is the focus of this season of programming at Asia Society, and that nation has long been a focus of Mr. Soros’ attention and work. Asia Society is delighted to welcome Mr. Soros for a conversation about the challenges and opportunities that come when nations emerge from one-party rule and political isolation.
George Soros’ Open Society is a network of foundations, partners, and projects in more than 100 countries. His commitment to the idea of open society — where rights are respected, government is accountable, and no one has the monopoly on the truth — makes the Open Society Foundations unlike any other private philanthropic effort in history.
Orville Schell is the Arthur Ross Director of the Center on U.S.-China Relations at Asia Society in New York. He is a former Dean at the University of California, Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism. Schell is the author of fourteen books, nine of them about China, and a contributor to numerous edited volumes.
