Renowned photographer and activist Shahidul Alam shares his work and discusses the power of the image to tell a story of deep emotion and the stories of many who are unable to share their narrative with the world. The images are powerful and his commitment of holding 'truth to power' is an inspiration. He will be in conversation with Ram Rahman.

Shahidul Alam is a photographer, writer, curator, activist, and Time Magazine’s Person of the Year 2018. His work has been shown in MOMA, Centre Georges Pompidou, Royal Albert Hall, Tate Modern and Museum of Contemporary Arts Tehran. He has been a guest curator of Whitechapel Gallery, Winterthur Gallery, National Art Gallery Malaysia, Musee de Quai Branly and Brussels Biennale and the Auckland Festival of Photography. His numerous awards include the Shilpakala Award, the highest state honour given to Bangladeshi artists. He was the 2018 recipient of Lucie Foundation Humanitarian Award and the ICP Special Presentation Award in 2019.
Alam set up the award winning Drik agency, Bangladesh Photographic Institute, Chobi Mela festival, Majority World agency and Pathshala, the South Asian Media Institute. He also introduced email to Bangladesh in the early nineties.
Photographer, artist, curator, designer, and activist Ram Rahman initially studied physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Later, Rahman completed a degree in Graphic Design from Yale University’s School of Art in 1979.
Rahman has shown his photographs in India and around the world. His most recent shows include at The Pompidou Centre, Paris, 2017, Houston Fotofest, 2018, Gwangju Biennale, 2018 and the Chennai PhotoBiennale 2019. ‘Bioscope: Scenes from an Eventful Life’ presented by Bodhi Art at Rabindra Bhavan, New Delhi, in 2008.
Amongst the shows Rahman has curated are Delhi- Building the Modern at the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art, Delhi, 2017, Sunil Janah Vintage Photographs at the NGMA, Mumbai, October 2015, and Delhi Modern: The Architectural Photographs of Madan Mahatta at Photoink, Delhi, in 2012.
Rahman has lectured on aspects of contemporary Indian photography and architecture including The Bhau Daji Lad Museum, Mumbai, Jnanapravah, Mumbai, MoMA, New York, The Pompidou Centre, Paris, Tate Modern, London, including major lectures on Sunil Janah, Raghubir Singh, and the modern architecture of New Delhi.
Rahman is one of the founding members of the Safdar Hashmi Memorial Trust (SAHMAT) in New Delhi, a leader in the resistance to communal and sectarian forces in India through its public cultural action. The artist lives and works in New Delhi.His photographs are in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York, The Pompidou Centre, Paris, The Metropolitan Museum, New York, The Devi Art Foundation, Delhi, and private collections.
