Join a conversation between two internationally known entrepreneurs: Wendi Murdoch and Jerry Yang. Murdoch, a movie producer, collector of Chinese contemporary art and a co-founder of Artsy, a digital start-up that globally enables people to discover, learn about and collect fine art, and Yang, co-founder of Yahoo! and a collector of Chinese calligraphy. This dynamic discussion will explore how technology is transforming the practices of presenting and collecting art. Moderated by Melissa Chiu, Asia Society Museum Director.
Wendi Murdoch is co-CEO of Big Feet Productions, a film production company launched in 2008. Ms. Murdoch produced the feature film Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, based on the 2005 best-selling novel of the same name. It was released simultaneously in the United States, Europe and China in summer, 2011 and won the Golden Angel Film Award in November of that year. Ms. Murdoch, a collector of Chinese contemporary art, is also a co-founder of Artsy, a digital start-up that globally enables people to discover, learn about and collect fine art. She continues to provide strategic counsel to News Corporation’s interests in China and began her career with the company as a vice president at its satellite television operation, STAR. A native of China, Ms. Murdoch is fluent in Mandarin and English. She holds an MBA from Yale University’s School of Management and a BA in Economics from California State University at Northridge in Los Angeles. Ms. Murdoch currently serves on the boards of American Film Institute and Yale School of Management. She is married to Rupert Murdoch, Chairman and CEO of News Corporation. The couple has two children.
Entrepreneur Jerry Yang co-founded Yahoo! Inc. in 1995 and served on the Board of Directors and as a key member of the executive management team until 2012. While at Yahoo! he led a number of initiatives, including two of the biggest investments in the internet: Yahoo! Japan and Alibaba Group. Yang holds BS and MS degrees in electrical engineering from Stanford University. He is widely recognized as a visionary and pioneer in the internet technology sector, and was named one of the top 100 innovators in the world under the age of thirty-five by the MIT Technology Review in 1999. Yang is currently on Stanford University's Board of Trustees, where he is a vice-chair. Yang and his wife, Akiko Yamazaki, are well known philanthropists who focus on higher education, conservation and the arts.
Melissa Chiu (moderator) is Museum Director and Senior Vice President, Global Arts and Cultural Programs, Asia Society, New York. She was previously founding director of the Asia-Australia Arts Centre in Sydney (1996-2001). As a leading authority on Asian contemporary art, she has organized nearly thirty exhibitions of artists from across Asia including a retrospective by Zhang Huan, a survey of Yoshitomo Nara, and an exhibition of art from China’s Cultural Revolution. Chiu is the author of numerous articles and books including Breakout: Chinese Art Outside China, Chinese Contemporary Art: 7 Things You Should Know, Asian Art Now (co-authored with Benjamin Genocchio) and an anthology Contemporary Art in Asia: A Critical Reader (co-edited with Benjamin Genocchio).
