Songs of Punjab: Narratives of Resilience
Navdeep Suri and Vidya Shah in conversation with Sanjoy K Roy
The Jallianwala Bagh Massacre of 1919 stands out as a turning point in the bloody history of the British Empire and India's struggle for Independence. On that fateful day of April 13, 1919, General Dyer opened fire on a peaceful crowd inside a community park in Amritsar and killed almost a thousand unarmed civilians. 22-year-old Nanak Singh survived the bloodshed and wrote a searing ballad, Khooni Vaisakhi, which was soon banned by the British. Nanak Singh went on to become one of the best-known writers of the Punjabi language and his diplomat grandson, Navdeep Suri, has translated the poem into English. Khooni Vaisakhi has now been put to song by musician and composer Harpreet. Join Navdeep and Harpreet as they pay a melodious tribute to the massacre of innocence and the spirit of resilience.
6 p.m. - 6:45 p.m.
Loot: Tania James in conversation with Sree Srinivasan
Academic and writer Tania James’ recent novel, Loot, follows the journey of a young woodcarver in the 18th century and discovers how his experiences mirror the transformation of nations and dynasties ravaged by war across India and Europe. In conversation with Sree Sreenivasan, she discusses the legacy of colonialism traversing through India, France and England.
7 p.m. - 7:45 p.m.
Tarun Tahiliani : Journey to India Modern
Tarun Tahiliani in conversation with Fern Mallis.
For almost three decades, Tarun Tahiliani has galvanized Indian fashion. His vision and its translation into garments have reintroduced India to her own rich sartorial history and legacy. Journey to India Modern celebrates Tahiliani’s contribution not simply through bewitching clothing but also through a question that he aims to answer through his ensembles: Can the past and present be merged for a global contemporary society?
