Shanghai Kunqu Opera: The Lanke Mountain (Performance 2)
VIEW EVENT DETAILSThe Shanghai Kunqu Opera Troupe, one of China's most renowned theater companies, is known for their extraordinary craftsmanship. Kunqu artists combine acting, movement, singing and live music in a total theatrical immersion. One of the oldest and most influential forms of Chinese opera, the troupe brings 20 performers to New York for three special performances.
The Lanke Mountain is a tale of greed, ambition, betrayal and humor; a story which harkens back to a historical past while connecting to contemporary times. The story followings the heroine Cui, who divorces and then attempts to return to her husband. It is acted with total abandon, rarely seen in Kunqu performances, which are generally marked by subtlety and restraint.
This program is made possible, in part, by generous support from the Ministry of Culture, People's Republic of China.
