Preview and Discussion: 'Bound' — A New Chamber Opera
VIEW EVENT DETAILSFrom acclaimed composer Huang Ruo
Join a special preview and conversation around the new chamber opera BOUND, inspired by the news headline: “Diane Tran, Honor Student at Texas High School, Jailed for Missing School.” BOUND, from acclaimed composer Huang Ruo, explores the experience of a Vietnamese immigrant family torn between the notion of the American dream and preserving their cultural heritage.
BOUND explores the tension between personal and familial obligations, the duties that bind people and the conflict of choice. Diane works two jobs to take care of her family; between school and family duty, she chooses the latter. The judge who determines her fate also faces a choice, between compassion and enforcing the law. Librettist Bao-Long Chu, says about the work: “To me, a Vietnamese refugee living in America, the notion of being bound to one’s culture (and the struggles therein) is not just an idea, but my life writ large.”
Excerpts from the opera will be interwoven with conversations between the artists. BOUND runs from April 13-19, 2019 at Baruch Performing Arts Center. Tickets for the full opera can be purchased here.
