Please join Asia Society for a conversation with Nandan Nilekani, Chair of the Unique ID Authority of India (UIDAI) and a co-founder of Infosys. Mr. Nilekani’s work at the UIDAI has revolutionized the way Indians access personal and social benefits, and is helping to ensure millions reap the benefits of the country’s rapid development.
Under Mr. Nilekani's reign as Infosys CEO, the company's revenue grew by more than 50 percent. He left Infosys in 2009 to take up his position at the UIDAI, where he launched Aadhar, an online 12 digit biometric system and ID number. So far 300 million residents have been enrolled and another 300 million are expected to be enrolled by 2014, thereby facilitating access to a range of public and social services including banks, pensions, scholarships and other entitlements. In 2009, Time magazine named Mr. Nilekani one of the "100 Most Influential People in the World."
The discussion will be moderated by Dr. Ajay Chhibber. Dr. Chhibber is UN Assistant Secretary-General and UNDP Assistant Administrator in UNDP’s Regional Bureau for Asia and the Pacific, where he manages programs covering 39 countries. Prior to coming to UNDP, he worked at the World Bank for almost 25 years on a range of development issues.
