1941, WASSEYPUR, BENGAL. The British still control the country and have turned the region’s farmland into coal mines, exploiting Indian workers to the bone. Notorious dacoit Sultana Qureshi has earned a reputation for robbing British trains. When he catches an impersonator named Shahid Khan and expels him from the town, he unwittingly sets off a saga of violence and revenge that will span three generations and seven decades.
Featuring outsized performances by Manoj Bajpayee, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Richa Chadha and more, and an infectious soundtrack by Sneha Khanwalkar and Piyush Mishra, Kashyap’s opus has only grown in reputation in the years since its release, and has been cited by The Guardian as one of the best films of the 21st century so far.
