Water: Asia’s New Battleground, by Brahma Chellaney, was named winner of the 2012 Asia Society Bernard Schwartz Book Award for its outstanding contribution to advancing the understanding of contemporary Asia.
In his timely and insightful book, Dr. Chellaney describes water stress as Asia's defining crisis of the 21st century, creating obstacles to continued rapid economic growth, stoking interstate tensions over shared resources, exacerbating long-time territorial disputes, and imposing further hardships on the poor. Home to many of the world's great rivers and lakes, Asia also has a huge population and an exploding economic and agricultural demand for water, making it the most water-scarce continent on a per capita basis. Additionally, many of Asia's water sources cross national boundaries, and as less and less water is available, international tensions will rise. In response to this array of challenges, Dr. Chellaney proposes strategies to avoid conflict and more equitably share Asia’s water resources.
Please join us for a special luncheon honoring Dr. Chellaney, with remarks from the author, a discussion moderated by Carol Giacomo, and a book signing. An additional event with Dr. Chellaney will be taking place in coordination with the India Project at the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C. on January 24.
Brahma Chellaney is a professor at the Centre for Policy Research in New Delhi. He served as a member of the Policy Advisory Group headed by the Foreign Minister of India, and as an adviser to India's National Security Council. He has held appointments at Harvard University, the Brookings Institution, Johns Hopkins University, and the Australian National University and is the author of five previous books, including Asian Juggernaut: The Rise of China, India, and Japan.
Carol Giacomo (moderator) is a former diplomatic correspondent for Reuters in Washington, covering foreign policy for the international wire service for more than two decades before joining The New York Times editorial board in August 2007. In her previous position, she traveled over 1 million miles to nearly 100 countries with seven secretaries of state and various other senior U.S. officials. She has also served as a senior fellow at the United States Institute of Peace, researching U.S. economic and foreign policy decision-making during the Asian financial crisis.
