About

Asia Society’s 2023 Global Talent, Diversity and Inclusion Symposium is our annual, signature diversity, equity and inclusion event bringing together Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) talent, allies, business leaders, diversity, equity and inclusion practitioners, grassroots activists, organizational partners, policy influencers and others to discuss how to best support the advancement of AAPI talent both in and outside the workplace – and network!

2023 will be the event’s 15th Anniversary and our theme is “Activating Belonging and Inclusion for All: Allyship with the AAPI Community.” Taking place during the day at Asia Society in New York from 9am to 2:45pm EST, the event (offering both limited in-person registration and complimentary virtual attendance) will feature inspiring break-out sessions, a Career Expo, dialogues, keynotes, networking, and panel discussions providing tactical guidance on how to best improve individual skill sets – both personally and professionally – with a focus on supporting the development and advancement of AAPI professional talent. We will also host discussions on what solutions and best practices companies and individuals should explore to better support AAPI talent and other communities within the workplace.

Separate yet related, Asia Society will also host an in-person Awards Gala (including networking reception and seated dinner) in the evening for the 2023 Asian Corporate Survey at Asia Society in New York from 6:00 to 9:00pm EST! We expect 200 AAPI professionals, senior business leaders, DEI experts and practitioners and allies to come together for one memorable evening as we bestow awards “live” in several categories on select U.S. based companies that participated in the survey for their outstanding commitment to supporting AAPI talent in the workplace. It’s going to be an exciting and memorable evening!

The biennial Asian Corporate Survey is a national benchmarking study that explores how U.S. based companies are engaging and supporting the development of AAPI talent. A narrative, analytical report based on the collective corporate submissions for the survey will also be publicly released in conjunction with the Awards Gala.

Registration for the Symposium (in-person individual participation may be purchased based on availability, virtual attendance will be complimentary yet limited) and the Awards Gala (limited in-person tickets may be available based on capacity) will open in early March 2023.

Martin Tan is the CEO of The Majurity Trust, a philanthropic organisation that works with donors and charities to build a thriving and sustainable community for all in Singapore.

Martin currently serves as board member of the National Council of Social Service, Children’s Museum Singapore, Founders Memorial as well as Halogen Foundation Singapore, a charity which he co-founded in 2003. He was formerly Executive Director of Institute for Societal Leadership at Singapore Management University and also served on the Boards of National Youth Council, National Library Board and National Family Council. 

As a leadership development practitioner and facilitator, Martin worked with leaders in the public, private and people sector in over 14 countries including Afghanistan, Bhutan, China, India, New Zealand, Southeast Asia, United Kingdom and the United States. For his contributions, Martin was awarded The Outstanding Young Person Award in 2008; inducted as Asia 21 Fellow in 2011; conferred the Singapore Youth Award in 2013; and appointed Global Council Member of Asia Society in 2019.

Maria Torres-Springer 
New York City Deputy Mayor for Economic and Workforce Development 

Maria Torres-Springer is the NYC Deputy Mayor for Economic and Workforce Development, charged with spearheading the administration’s efforts to strengthen and diversify its economy, invest in emerging industries, bolster small business, connect New Yorkers to family-sustaining jobs, and expand access to arts and culture.

She previously was Vice President of US Programs at the Ford Foundation where she oversaw the foundation’s domestic grant making and made historic investments to support racial equity, workers’ rights, voting rights, and arts and culture across the country.

As commissioner of the NYC Department of Housing Preservation and Development, Maria focused on the production of housing for the city’s most vulnerable communities, while also launching several new programs to protect tenants’ rights. She led the implementation of Housing New York, a five-borough, 12-year plan to create or preserve 300,000 affordable homes; and she steered the financing of approximately 60,000 affordable homes.

Earlier, as president and CEO of New York City Economic Development Corporation, Maria led the implementation of the new citywide ferry service and made major investments in key sectors of the city’s economy. She also spearheaded several neighborhood revitalization plans. Prior to that, as commissioner of the NYC Department of Small Business Services, Maria prioritized efforts to raise wages and support women and immigrant-owned businesses and worked to prepare New Yorkers for 21st-century jobs.

Maria earned her bachelor's degree in ethics, politics, and economics from Yale University and a master’s in public policy from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. She lives in Brooklyn with her husband and two daughters.

State of the AAPI Community in the U.S. and the Need and Impact of Proactive, Inclusive Leadership, 10:25AM ET 

As the U.S. continues to come out of the pandemic, many challenges continue to face the AAPI community. Growing anti-Asian sentiment. Mental health concerns. Challenges to being recognized in the workplace and seizing those opportunities for professional growth and advancement. This opening panel conversation will shed light on the current state of the AAPI community across personal and professional lines. Furthermore, it will highlight the need for business leaders to recognize the challenges facing the AAPI community and what they can do in order to build a more diverse, equitable and just society for all. Representing different perspectives, we will explore challenges and opportunities as we look to build a more unified AAPI community both within and outside the workplace.

John Wang
President, Asian American Business Development Center 

John Wang is President of the Asian American Business Development Center, Inc. (AABDC) which he founded in 1994. AABDC is a unique non-profit consulting organization, originally established to provide technical and professional assistance to Asian American small businesses.

Over the years, a major component of AABDC’s work has expanded into the promotion and advocacy of Asian American executives, business leaders and entrepreneurs through the Outstanding 50 Asian Americans in Business Award which recognizes the achievement and contribution of Asian Americans in the general economy. Over 1,000 Asian Americans have been honored since 2001.

Under John’s leadership, AABDC has established a distinguished track record and leadership role in promoting U.S.-China trade through organizing trade missions, seminars and workshops, conferences and trade shows, and networking events in the U.S. and in China since 2000.

In 2008, John founded the New York in China Center with the goal of creating a New York presence in China to help New York businesses access the China market and attract Chinese investment to New York. More recently, he has also begun collaboration with other key minority groups with the aim of launching
