Compensation: $70,000 - $85,000
SUMMARY:
China Books Review, a digital magazine publishing commentary on all things China and bookish, seeks an Associate Editor to assist with editorial duties, including editing columns and features, with a special focus on commissioning reviews of Chinese books and essays by Chinese writers (overseeing translation from Chinese to English if necessary). This is currently a grant-dependent job, estimated for a period of one year with employment beyond that dependent on renewal of the grant.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Manage, oversee and edit regular columns on the site (including New China Books, My China Bookshelf, The China Archive, China Books Podcast, China Book Talks, China Book Q&As).
- Commission and edit some feature articles on the site (including reviews, essays, excerpts, profiles, stories), with a special remit to highlight Chinese voices, or books published in Chinese (overseeing translation from Chinese to English if necessary).
- Manage and update comprehensive lists for upcoming, recent and bestselling China books, as well as highlighting editors’ picks.
- Occasionally write articles for the site.
- Occasionally host podcast interviews in our studio.
- Edit the audio or video of podcast interviews as necessary.
- Assist with social media posting and other forms of marketing.
- Assist with contributor payments and other forms of admin.
- Work with the China Books Review’s Editor to identify new opportunities and growth areas for the magazine.
- Investigate and trial bilingual publication for selected articles (overseeing translation from English to Chinese if necessary, or partnerships with Chinese-language websites).
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 3+ years of relevant work experience in editing, ideally in books-related or other culture and society content relating to China.
- Bachelors degree, preferably relevant to the field.
- Knowledge of China and China writing required; experience living and working in China preferred.
- Fluency in Mandarin (written and spoken) strongly preferred.
- Experience in social media and other forms of marketing preferred.
- Experience in audio and video editing preferred.
- Demonstrated media performer (eg podcasts/public events) preferred.
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:
Salary Range: $70,000 - $85,000
Compensation within this range is determined by skills, experience, and organizational equity.
