China's Tilt Toward the Middle East
"China's recent announcement that it will support a proposed resolution in the United Nations General Assembly calling for Palestinian statehood is a potential game changer in the Middle East,” says Asia Society Executive Vice President Jamie Metzl. “With the United States on track to become less dependent on Middle East oil over the coming years and China more, it is inevitable that China will seek to play a greater role in that strategically critical part of the world. This announcement by China is a first step in a likely Chinese tilt towards the oil producing states of the Middle East that has the potential to fundamentally change the balance of power in that region over coming decades.”
