Anthony Albanese’s visit to China on 4-7 November is a notable milestone - the first by an Australian Prime Minister since 2016.

Mr Albanese goes to Beijing and Shanghai with much of the fabric of Australia’s pre-2020 relationship with China restored. Australia is back talking to China’s leaders and ministers. Beijing has unwound nearly all the coercive trade measures it imposed from May 2020 onwards.

China wants the relationship to go “beyond stabilisation”. The outlook for further gains in the short-term is positive. But China’s path under Xi Jinping – more assertive, ideological and authoritarian – weighs still on the future.
