[ASK-Y 2023] Session 2 | War and Peace in the Digital Era
October 30, 2023 — Session 2 of Asia Society Korea Youth (ASK-Y) ventured into the landscapes of contemporary global conflicts using a unique role-play format. Guided by the host, Executive Director Yvonne Kim, the cohorts examined the nuances of these complex conflicts, offering fresh insights, and raising vital questions.
Russia-Ukraine Conflict: Alissa Yanik-Woods, a bachelor of law and international relations at Bond University, and Jevon Dixon, a doctoral candidate in international relations at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, explored the intricacies of the Russia-Ukraine conflict. A following Q&A session sparked a thought-provoking discussion on Ukraine's ability to defend itself through advanced technology.
Korean War: Representing North Korea, Zumaro Zumaro, a doctoral candidate in advanced nuclear engineering at Pohang University of Science and Technology, joined François de Navacelle, a master’s candidate in economics at Yenching Academy of Peking University, representing South Korea. Their presentations delved into possible triggers, ideological struggles, and the concept of sovereignty in the context of the Korean War.
Myanmar Civil War: Ignacio Barroso Gómez, a recent graduate in international relations from Rey Juan Carlos University, and Edwyna Kurniawan, a master’s candidate in development cooperation at Ewha University, engaged in a dialogue exploring themes related to governance structures, democracy, and legitimacy.
The session concluded with an open discussion, contemplating the tragedies of war and the autonomy of nations in our digitized age, questioning whether they can defend themselves without the intervention of more potent world powers.
