Guidelines for Sinohydro staff.
Offers specific guidance to improve environmental management and promote environmental protection and conservation.
Sinohydro should:
- Abide by host countries’ laws and regulations, international standards, and the company’s requirements, and apply the strictest standards wherever possible.
- Foster social and economic development to achieve long-term, sustainable community development and create equal development opportunities.
- Adopt the World Bank’s “Safeguard Policies” as a minimum standard for operations.
Sinohydro should:
- Publicly disclose its environmental efforts and progress on the implementation of this policy.
- Expand open, transparent dialogue with local communities in project areas.
- Respect the culture of local communities.
- Establish local recruitment mechanisms.
Sinohydro should:
- Identify and assess the social and environmental impacts of activities.
- Prevent and limit environmental impacts.
- Protect biodiversity and the environment.
- Not conduct projects in national parks, World Heritage areas, habitats of threatened species, and internationally listed and protected wetlands.
- Implement and develop an environmental management system that includes an environmental impact assessment (EIA) and implementation plan, mitigation measures, and monitoring mechanisms to track impacts as well as efforts to rehabilitate disturbed areas.
