How can we educate future leaders, leaders who don’t just maximize short-term gains but guide corporate stakeholders and all of society toward a sustainable and prosperous future? Clearly, traditional models of MBA education fall short of preparing for the new complexities leaders must address, but what are the alternatives? Does Japan-style leadership offer values and guiding principles that are better suited to promote all-around prosperity? What should be demanded from our future leaders, and can leadership skills be taught?
Dr. Tomo Noda, founder of Shizenkan, has not just studied and practiced leadership education at the world’s top schools – MIT, Harvard, INSEAD – but more importantly has actually built a new and thriving leadership academy here in Japan, the Institute for Strategic Leadership and Shizenkan University. Although little known outside Japan, his graduates are now deeply embedded in the C-suites of Japan Inc.
Professor Noda will share his views and practitioner’s insights into the challenges we face and must overcome to create better leaders. Please join us to learn and discuss with one of Japan’s leading educators educating leaders.

Speaker Bio
Dr. Tomo NODA
Founder and President, Graduate School of Leadership and Innovation, Shizenkan University (Shizenkan)
Founder, Institute for Strategic Leadership (ISL)
Dr. Tomo Noda is the founder of ISL and Shizenkan, Tokyo-based educational institutions dedicated to the development of next-generation leaders with the willpower, character, and creativity necessary to catalyze social and business innovation.
Formerly, he was a faculty member of the London Business School (1996-1997), INSEAD in Fontainebleau, France (1997-2000), INSEAD ASIA in Singapore (2001-2003), and SIMI in Denmark (1996-2005) where he taught organizational strategy and transformational leadership to MBAs and executives.
In 2001, Dr. Noda established his own educational institution, ISL, with the support of around 300 top corporate executives and social leaders, including Tony Kobayashi of Fuji Xeros, Kakutaro Kitashiro of Japan IBM, and Yasuchika Hasegawa of Takeda Pharmaceutical. Since then, over 1,600 corporate managers and social entrepreneurs have graduated from ISL’s flagship whole-person leadership programs.
By leveraging the resources and networks of ISL, he then launched Shizenkan Graduate School, officially approved by Japan’s Ministry of Education, in 2018. Shizenkan offers a unique MBA program, both in Japanese and in English, which capitalizes on the strengths of Western business and design school approaches, liberal arts education, and the Asian tradition of self-reflection. Shizenkan aims to be a catalyst for change in the global management leadership education paradigm, closely working with Spain’s IESE, India’s SOIL, and Brazil’s FGV.
Dr. Noda holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Law from the University of Tokyo, a Master’s Degree in Science in Management from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and a Doctorate in Business Administration (Business Policy) from Harvard University.
