Surge: Contemporary Photography from Pakistan
MUMBAI-- 16 September 2015 Asia Society India Center welcomed its art supporters to ‘Surge: Contemporary Photography from Pakistan’ curated by PIX. The evening began with remarks from Dr. Martin Wälde, Director, Max Muller Bhavan, followed by a walk-through the exhibition with Tanvi Mishra, documentary photographer and editorial team member of PIX.
This exhibition was dedicated in memory of Sabeen Mahmud, founder and director of PeaceNiche and a member of the Asia 21 India-Pakistan Young Leaders network, was shot dead by unidentified gunmen in her hometown of Karachi late in April. A forthcoming initiative, the PIX Quarterly gives platform to young, emerging photographers who are attempting to give voice to issues and concerns close to their hearts and cities. Through the walk, Mishra went on to say there is an evident surging voice that is emerging Pakistan, and through the medium of photography, artists are able to express their feelings, emotions, and thoughts on the current political situation in Pakistan.
Featuring photographic works by Amber Hammad, Asef Ali Mohammed, Malcom Hutcheson and many more, Surge explores the link between art practice and documentary form in Pakistan. With an emphasis on gender and personal experience. The exhibition considers the social, cultural and historical context of Pakistan, to reveal how these experiences reflect the artist’s sense of place.
