Around the Table: conversations about milestones, memories, mappings
Asia Society India Centre has always been deeply committed to the arts as one of its key areas of focus and impact – the annual Asia Arts Game Changer Awards are a testament to that. 2021 marked 15 years of Asia Society in India and as we crossed this milestone, we began consciously redeveloping our identity to become a cultural hub for South Asia by expanding our arts and culture footprint and forms of engagement in the region.
To commemorate this and celebrate the legacy of our flagship awards, we are delighted to present Around the Table: conversations about milestones, memories, mappings, our first-ever exhibition developed in collaboration with the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art (KNMA) in New Delhi, a non-commercial organization that intends to exemplify the dynamic relationship between art and culture through its exhibitions, publications, educational and public programmes. Curated by Roobina Karode, Chief Curator and Director at the KNMA and a member of our advisory council for arts and culture, the exhibition is centred on the artistic careers of Vanguard artists from previous editions of our Asia Arts Game Changer Awards while reflecting on 75 years of the birth of India. The exhibition ties together the different journeys and works of Asia Arts Vanguards awardees, including Krishen Khanna, Arpita Singh, Gulammohammed Sheikh, Vivan Sundaram, the late Akbar Padamsee, Jyoti Bhatt and Himmat Shah - some of India's most eminent artists, whose contribution as initiators, pedagogues, authors, mentors and shapers of art movements in the years following Independence remains irrefutable. We present this small exhibition as a tribute to these artists, with the hope that it can help viewers deep dive into their world, tracing the arc of their intersecting artistic journeys over their decades of practice.
